Lenalee was born in China, and was the second child of the family. When she was young, Akuma (literally, demons. Akuma are the Earl’s weapons) killed her parents and she was raised by her brother, Komui. She doesn’t remember her life from before her parents’ deaths, probably due to shock. Lenalee and her brother lived a relatively normal life until she was found to be a host for Innocence, and the Order takes her away become an Exorcist.

For three years, she was forced to synchronise with the Innocence. She hated it and tried several times to escape. But every time, she was brought back. She became fearful of the Head Inspector, Malcolm C. Leverrier, who believed in only winning no matter what the cost was. Probably one of the few things that made it bearable was Kanda Yuu, two years older than her, who joined when she was eight and provided a comfort of sorts because he never questioned her when she hid in his room. But even that only forestalled her desperation. She even attempted to commit suicide and was tied down to a hospital bed after that. If anything, for actions prompted the Order to find Komui, who became a supervisor for her sake when she was ten. It had been four years since she had seen him, after all.

Things improved after that for Lenalee; she had to go on missions, but with her brother around, she had a reason to live and thus the Order became home for her. At the age of fourteen, Lavi and Bookman joined the Order, and her group of friends her age widened. Two years after that, Allen Walker joined, and she was no longer the youngest Exorcist. That is where the manga introduces her, in chapters 5 and 6.

Allen and Lenalee’s meeting was a bit of an abrupt one, with Lenalee hitting Kanda over the head for not backing down immediately (after misassumptions that Allen was an Akuma). But she immediately accepts Allen as a friend. Lenalee’s Innocence is revealed in Chapter 18, when Komui’s newest robot drinks his coffee and malfunctions, and Lenalee ends up saving Allen from “surgery.” In any case, Lenalee and Allen get along well.

Sometime later, they’re sent on a mission together to Germany to investigate “a town that does not have a tomorrow.” They suspect the phenomenon is caused by Innocence, and investigation bring to light that it is the cause of Miranda Lotto’s Innocence. Out of her depression, Miranda had wished that tomorrow would never come, and the Innocence had acted upon that wish. To try to get the time moving again in the town, they try to help Miranda find a stable job and improve her mood, but unbeknownst to them, there’s an enemy among them—the Noah. The Noah are part of the Millennium Earl’s, and they sought to kill Exorcists and destroy their Innocence. The Noah Road Kamelot captures Lenalee, Miranda, and Allen. Lenalee, nerves damaged by an Akuma who can control sound, is made Road’s doll when Road sets up her dream world. Things looked for the worse until Miranda, out of the want to protect an unconscious Allen, properly activates her Innocence, which is able to suck away time, thus healing their injuries.

Lenalee then wakes up, and she and Allen fight against the three Akuma until Road decides to take things further and commands one of the Akuma to self-destruct; Road tells Allen that if Akuma are destroyed without using Innocence, the captured souls in them are lost. Allen rushes to save the Akuma, but he can’t make it time, and Lenalee prevents him from being hit in the explosion. Allen, angry, pushes her arm and, more distressingly, her concern away. Lenalee is then angered, and she slaps him for his words. When he asks why she did that, she answers vehemently that it was because they are friends. The Akuma are defeated though, and Road leaves, promising an encounter in the future. The dream world crumbles, and the three are returned to Miranda’s house. Miranda is at first unwilling to deactivate her Innocence because if she did, Allen and Lenalee’s injures would return, but they tell her that they’ll bear their injuries and Miranda deactivates her Innocence.

Lenalee and Allen are taken to a nearby town and taken care by Komui and Bookman. Lenalee wakes up far later than Allen does; it takes an Akuma attack before she awakens and destroys the Akuma attacking Komui. Allen notices that she’s visibly avoiding him, and it’s only when he publicly apologises that she reveals what is bothering her. She says she hasn’t forgiven him yet because he’s selfish to think that only he can save. “What are friends for,” she asks, “why don’t you let me fight by your side?” Lenalee admits that she hates Allen’s left eye (which can detect Akuma), and when Allen thanks for her helping him back then, Lenalee glares at him and says that she would always help him. Then she quickly walk away, but it’s clear that this was her way of forgiving him.

Lenalee, Allen, Lavi, and Bookman are given instructions to seek out General Cross Marian in Edo (Japan), though they’re slightly delayed when Lavi and Allen are detained by superstitious townspeople and made to deal with a “vampire,” who turns out to be Arystar Krory, a host for a parasitic Innocence. Delays aside, they start on their journey to Edo, first going through China. All goes well until they have to travel by ship in order for the final leg of the journey; something shaped like a huge white torso of sorts is hurling through the air, destroying Akuma, but also hurting normal people. Lenalee realises that it’s Suman, an Exorcist, but that he has become a Fallen One (When an Exorcist betrays their Innocence, the Innocence overtakes them and turns them Fallen Ones). In an attempt to help Suman, Allen allows himself to be trapped by Suman, leaving the others behind. They disappear, and Lenalee and Lavi later go about trying to find Allen. It is only after Timcampi (Allen’s golem, or rather, Cross’ golem) shows a recording of what happened to Allen that they find out that Suman is “eaten” up by butterflies, and that a Noah had attacked Allen and destroyed his Innocence. They rush to his location, only to find that he’s no longer there. Despondent, they return to the ship and discover that people from the Asian Branch of the Black Order give the news that Allen was found, but that he had to be left behind. Lenalee is reluctantly, but even she understands that without his Innocence, Allen cannot fight.

Lenalee and the others reunite with Miranda Lotto—now a proper Exorcist—and continue on without Allen. After she puts on the new uniforms they’re given, she goes in search of Anita (captain of the ship), asking if she could borrow hairties because in the previous fight, she had lost hers. Anita lends Lenalee a pair that had been her mother’s, but she never wore them because of unfulfilled promise with her mother. Lenalee receives new resolve with this conversation they have, and not too soon, because a Level 3 Akuma attacks the ship at that moment.

The other Exorcists are beaten down, and Lenalee decides to go after the Akuma, on her own. She activates her Innocence and puts up a fight until he overwhelms her; the Akuma known as Eshi has the ability of using dark matter to create chains that weigh down whatever they are wrapped around. He wraps the around Miranda’s Innocence, and around Lenalee, causing her to sink in the water. Despite the pain it causes her, Lenalee tries her best to wrench the chains away. She continues to fight, even when she is sinking to the bottom of the ocean and consciousness is nearly gone.

There is a flashback at this point of a conversation she had with Allen, before the group headed to Edo. Allen’s eye had been activating every night, giving him no peace. He hid it well, but Lenalee had been plagued by dreams of the end of the world, where everything was in ruins. Frightened, she ran to Allen and told him no to go further into the darkness, and then she admitted her dream to him. Lenalee said to him that she thought of her world as being made up of her friends. If she should lose one of her friends, it was as if she lost a piece of her world. She went so far as to say she valued her friends more than her real world.

With these thoughts, Lenalee activates her Innocence to the full, even though she isn’t supposed unless her synchro rate is 100% (her rate at the moment is only 86%). She temporarily cancels out Eshi’s dark matter ability and speeds upward through the water. Though Lenalee confesses that she’s scared, she promises, for the sake of her world, she’ll defeat the Akuma. Once out of the water, she continues to fight, even while her body breaks down, because she is waiting for the chance to use her last attack. By suppressing her innocence, she had gather the chains of gravity in order to use them against Eshi, taking on the brunt of his attacks in order to have such a chance. This is not without risk, though. The friction from her speed threatens to burn everything, including Lenalee herself.

But Eshi is destroyed, and Lenalee has broken the chains from the ship. One of the last things on her mind is Anita’s hairties...which are at risk of also being destroyed. Even at the end, it is never about herself, but others.

It’s a close cut (figuratively and literally) for Lenalee. Her uniform is shredded, and her hair burnt off. Her Innocence, fully released, cannot seem to return to what it once was, but when Lenalee falls unconscious, it protects her by encasing her in crystal. Said form is found by Chomosuke, an akuma modified by Cross Marian. The akuma finds Lavi and the exorcist takes her back to the ship. The crystal releases her, and she asks if she is still in this world, and she is. The hairties rolls out of her hand, saved. However, her legs have strange spiral patterns on them, and she can’t move them well. The price of fully releasing her Innocence was this, it seems. The Exorcists decide that instead of the whole ship going to Edo, that only they and the survivors from the ship would leave because Miranda’s power is exhausted. It is no happy parting, though. Of the whole crew, only three survived. Lenalee has to leave, tearfully watching the ship, Anita, and others be destroyed and disappear.

They reach Edo, with Chomosuke as their guide. Edo, once full of humans, is teeming with akuma as Edo is the Earl’s land for over a hundred years now. Chomosuke is not the only modified akuma there, but when she approached another modified akuma, she discovers the other has been taken over by the Earl’s akuma. The Earl arrives, and begins to call to all the Akuma as he wants them to attack the generals. Lavi at this point grows upset, and he reveals their position.

And Lenalee can do nothing. During this arc, all she can do is stand by her friends. She cannot use her Innocence and quite often ends up in trouble because of it. She was the first to be pulled into the Ark and the others had to follow. Yet, she is still the encouragement. One by one she is almost quite certain she has lost companions in each fight during their time, Lenalee remains steady. She says she has to fight because she is an Exorcist; injuries cannot let her fight, but she doesn’t stop trying. Eventually--their mission is completed. Cross is found and the battle is over and they can return home--for a brief moment.

Her Innocence synchro rate is low; there are hints of it evolving, changing. Lenalee is forced to meet with things of her past--Leverrier. The man in charge of so many things. There are other worries...Allen is being monitored by Central, and she doesn’t understand it. Before she can dwell too much on it, though, there is a debilitating attack on HQ by a Noah and a large group of Akuma. Lenalee goes out to fight, only to be locked up in the hospital wing with Lavi. Her brother refuses to let her out, because of his own worry for her. She is not going to be staying out of the fight, though.

She’s already feeling conflicted about her choices, even willing to force synchro. “It’s not I don’t care if I die...I want to live! I want to go on living with Brother...with everyone else...But that’s why I have to keep on fighting. That’s the only choice I have.” The Level 4 Akuma is no longer contained, and she can do nothing.

It is Leverrier who opens the door, to ask whether or not Lenalee is an Exorcist. She can only reply that the day she became an Exorcist, she stopped running.

Grin and bear it, in a sense. She goes to get her Innocence put back in her body, while those dear to her fight all around her. It’s doesn’t work; the Level 4 interferes and knocks her to the ground. Dazed, she reaches toward her Innocence. “To God whom I hate so much, give me strength. Never in my life have I wanted Innocence so much.” She’s tired of grieving, she wants the power to fight and to win. If she can protect everyone, then she will follow the Innocence forever. The Innocence that she holds in her hands dissolves into a liquid, and she drinks it. For a heartbeat, nothing happens. Then, cross-shaped gashes appear on her ankles, blood seeping out. It then returns to her body, and Lenalee is able again to activate her Dark Boots. Only, they’re different. She no longer has to speak commands; the Innocence adjusts to her thoughts, going higher and faster.

With this power, she and Allen are finally able to defeat the Level 4 Akuma. Things slowly return to some degree of normalcy (no help from the moving...and the odd potions that exist), and Headquarters is relocated. Lenalee continues her routine of serving coffee, going on missions, and waiting for her friends to come back. It’s not all the same, with Central looming over Allen. Cross disappears, most likely dead, and there’s also the appearance of the Third Exorcists. Still, it’s a war, and they continue to fight. Until one mission happens--they were scattered; Lenalee was in Greece when Noah showed up.

It was hardly a good outcome. Something happened to the Thirds, morphing them into unspeakable forms, and she was forced to kill one of them. She goes to find out Kanda is gone, Lavi and Bookman are unaccounted for, Allen is imprisoned, and others injured. Jerry tries to keep everyone’s spirits up, and it works...for a bit until an explosion goes off, and then she hears the announcement saying that Allen is with Noah and to be hunted down--and that his status as an Exorcist is frozen.

Lenalee instantly takes off to find him, and find him she does, standing in front of the Ark, ready to leave. Allen, with that smile on his face, and then his hug to her, and his final words. It’s hard to believe that he’s gone...and that her closest friends are not with her. She wonders if she had chosen the Order over Allen...and where her resolve it.

However, three months later in France, she receives a surprise--Kanda. He returns with them to the Order, where his words to her are “I feel you’ve become quite ugly...you must’ve lost it and started crying again.” After Kanda meets with Zhu, he retrieves his Innocence, which liquidises. Lenalee rushes forward to clap her hands over the cube, asking if it’s all right, if he’s sure. Kanda responds by prying her hands open and drinking the Innocence from her hand (she later punches him for it).

The last scene of Lenalee is when she is covering for Kanda’s departure to go look for Allen, lying that she has no idea where he went. Things at least are looking up, just a little. If one can return, it means others can, as well.
